Mess for the sake of screen-free learning moments

Today I gave my kids empty bottles, jars, some spoons, and bowls with white vinegar, rice vinegar and baking soda.

They seemed a bit aimless and I wanted to keep them occupied yet screen-free - something more and more challenging to sustain during this time of indoor learning. The result? A solid hour of investigating how one ingredient interacts with the other, two major kitchen table explosions, and the verdict that white vinegar reacts more strongly than rice vinegar when mixed with baking soda.

They seemed to love the soothing sound the vinegar and baking soda make when blended together, too. I loved the happy squeals as they mixed and watched and listened. The only downside was the huge mess this activity made - but an hour of self-directed, screen-free science made it all worth it.
